Overview

The Elephanta Caves are situated in Western India on Elephanta Island (also called the Island of Gharapuri), which highlights two hillocks isolated by a tight valley. The little island is dabbed with various old archeological remaining parts that are the sole declarations to its rich social past. These archeological remaining parts uncover proof of occupation from as soon as the second century BC. The stone cut Elephanta Caves were built about the mid-fifth to sixth hundreds of years AD. The most significant among the caverns is the incomparable Cave 1, which estimates 39 meters from the front access to the back. In plan, this cavern in the western slope intently looks like Dumar Lena cave at Ellora, in India. The principal body of the cavern, barring the porches on the three open sides and the back passageway, is 27 meters square and is upheld by lines of six sections each. Elephanta Caves are an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

What To Expect

Elephanta Caves
Elephanta Caves are a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a collection of cave temples predominantly dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. They are located on Elephanta Island, or Gharapuri (literally "the city of caves") in Mumbai Harbour, 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) to the east of the city of Mumbai in the Indian state of Mahārāshtra. The island, located offshore about 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) west of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port, consists of five Hindu caves and a few Buddhist stupa mounds that date back to the 2nd century BCE, as well as a small group of two Buddhist caves with water tanks.

Amazing afternoon tour on the Elephanta Caves
Conrado O, 11-01-2023
Everything was awesome! We started around 1:30 PM (we arrived in Mumbai on the same day), and our Driver (Dipendra) picked us up in the hotel. Dipendra was the first good surprise! Very smart and funny with lots of knowledge of the city and many funny stories. He parked the car right next to the where we boarded the boat and he went with us to the island. There we meet Manoj, our guide. Very knowledgeable and kind person. He lives in the island and he knows everything/everyone. It was an amazing experience to be able to see the caves and to learn a bit about the Hindu culture. Oh yea, the pictures were awesome as well.
Amazing, unique and an informative experience.

Ajay was an excellent driver who took us from the hotel to Elephanta Caves and back. He was informative, patient and really helpful for the entire day trip. He was also very punctual and understanding towards our group.

We also had a guide by the name of Manoj who actually lives on the island. It was amazing to hear the stories of his childhood, his passion for cricket and how he taught himself English. Above all he was very informative about the caves.
It was a nice experience

Dipendra, our driver, was excellent. He helped us navigate through a huge crowd and ensured our spot on the ferry during a very busy festival season. He made sure our children were happy with sodas and ice cream and was kind and charismatic. He escorted us to the island where we met with our tour guide Manoj, who was knowledgeable and informative. We really enjoyed this tour. Both Dipendra and Manoj went out of their way to ensure our family had an excellent tour. We highly recommend booking with them!
Excellent tour!

Our driver, Dipendra was excellent. He had been working with the tour company for over seven years and had been a driver for over 30 years. He was incredibly knowledgeable and very friendly. He rode with us on the ferry out to the island, and then introduced us to our tour guide on the island, Manoj. He actually lived on the island and was intimately knowledgeable of all the caves and surrounding area. Highly recommend this tour. We were very well taken care of and felt very safe in all of the crowded areas the entire time.
